Match Report Southam Utd 5 v 0 Banbury Utd Dev 14/12

SOUTHAM UNITED 5 BANBURY UNITED DEVELOPMENT 0

Hellenic Div 2 North League Match

Two goals up at the interval, Saints piled on the pressure after the break to run up another big score at Southam College and consolidate their position at the top of the table, writes David Hucker.

Banbury came into the match with just one win behind them and they managed to keep Saints at bay until five minutes before half-time when Ethan Champkins headed home a Frankie Baigent cross to open the scoring. There was time for Caleb Myton to make it 2-0 with a smart finish from inside the box in the 44th minute to send Saints into the break in a strong position.

Leading scorer Levi Steele added the third in the 69th minute with a finish from 20 yards and, ten minutes later, Champkins curled a 25-yarder into the top corner for his second of the match. Steele completed the scoring a minute from time as Saints made it nine wins from ten matches.

With unbeaten Adderbury Park dropping points in a goalless draw at Woodstock Town, this was an important win for Saints and, with a host of players unavailable, manager Richard Kay was, understandably, a happy man at the final whistle.

“ A very pleasing result and performance for what was, arguably, our most complete 90 minute performance of the season” said Kay.

“Another five goals scored and a clean sheet but, with a depleted squad, we had to dig deep. The players that came in were excellent and a few of them have had to be patient on the fringes of the squad to get their turn.”

“Whichever eleven I put out, the players keep performing and playing as a team. Again the attitude and application were outstanding and, with most of the squad returning on Saturday, it poses a few selection headaches.”

Saints are back at Southam College on Saturday when they will be looking for their second league double of the season against mid-table Buckingham Athletic Development. Kay expects to have Ricky Barby, Ross Feasey, Ashley Knights and Ara Rhema available for selection.

Kick off is at 2.00pm and admission is free.
